A curtain cleaning compliance certificate is more than a receipt — it is a regulatory document that demonstrates your facility’s commitment to infection control. During a HIQA inspection of a nursing home or care facility, the absence of proper compliance documentation for curtain cleaning is a common finding that can lead to a non-compliance notice.
This article explains exactly what a compliant curtain cleaning certificate should contain, and what questions a HIQA inspector is likely to ask.
What a Compliance Certificate Must Include
A curtain cleaning compliance certificate that will satisfy a HIQA inspector should contain the following information as a minimum:
- Date of treatment — day, month, and year
- Facility name and address
- Areas treated — specific rooms, wards, or floors covered; a room-by-room list is best practice
- Method used — steam, dry-clean, thermal extraction, or combination
- Products used — product name and manufacturer, with reference to the relevant EN standard where available
- Temperature and dwell time (for steam treatment) — demonstrating sufficient contact to achieve pathogen kill
- Technician name and signature
- Company details and contact information
What HIQA Inspectors Typically Ask
During an inspection visit, the person in charge or director of nursing may be asked to produce evidence of curtain cleaning. Common questions include:
- “When were the curtains in [specific ward or room] last cleaned?”
- “Can you show me the cleaning record for that?”
- “What method was used and what products were applied?”
- “Do you have a scheduled programme for regular curtain cleaning?”
- “Have the curtains been cleaned since the last infection outbreak?”
If the facility cannot answer these questions with documentary evidence in hand, the inspector will record this as a gap in infection prevention and control governance.
How Often Should You Have a Compliance Certificate?
HPSC guidelines recommend curtain cleaning at least every 6 months. This means you should have at minimum two compliance certificates per year, per facility. Additional certificates should be issued after any known contamination event.
Keep certificates in your IPC documentation folder, accessible to the person in charge at all times — not filed away where they cannot be produced quickly during an inspection.

Every Curtain Care Ireland treatment comes with a detailed compliance certificate meeting all the above requirements. Our certificates are formatted specifically for the nursing home sector and have been reviewed against HIQA inspection criteria. They include room-by-room treatment records, product technical data, and technician sign-off.
We also offer facilities a maintenance reminder service — we keep a record of your last treatment date and contact you when your 6-month interval is approaching, ensuring you are never caught out by an unannounced inspection.
